New Boy
Adapted by Russell Labey from the novel by William Sutcliffe

Mark starts the sixth form knowing that this is his last chance to impress – to be more popular, more obnoxious, the best informed about gynaecology. The mesmerizingly good looking new boy Barry, seems to be having trouble making friends. Everyone is afraid of him. He could be the perfect ally in Mark’s mission to enhance his social status and finally get a shag…

It’s been around the world but now it’s back to school in Britain for New Boy the acclaimed adaptation of William Sutcliffe’s (‘Are You Experienced’ and ‘The Love Hexagon’) hilarious novel. The run away hit of the Edinburgh Festival in 2000 ‘New Boy’ went on to play a sell out tour of the UK and London season before transferring to Broadway and Melbourne, Australia.

In its first major professional revival adapter Russell Labey revisits and redirects the simple story of a school boy crush, the power and devastation of which so many of us have experienced and then filed away under ‘adolescent phase’ without perhaps confronting the lessons it could teach us about how we define our sexuality or have it defined by others.

The production introduces two brilliant young drama school graduates, Luke Kempner as the clever but clumsy Mark and Gregg Lowe as the object of his and everyone else’s affection, Barry.

This show is very rude and very, very funny. It also rings true.

Fast and funny, Russell Labey’s adaptation of William Sutcliffe’s novel New Boy is a scintillating exploration of modern attitudes to gender and sex, full of witty one-liners and retorts.
