BEN SALFIELD
The Tabard Theatre is proud to host
Ben Salfield, described in the international media as
"one of the most exciting lutenists of his
generation",as he plays a special one-off concert.
He made his debut at St Ives, Cornwall in 1988, and has
since appeared at venues and festivals all over Europe.
An impressive international career now takes him to as
many as 10 countries per year for concerts both as a
soloist and an ensemble player.
Festivals that have hosted Ben Salfield include those at
Cheltenham, Malmo, Milan, Newbury, Paganini (Parma),
Prostejov, Warsaw and Zory; he has also performed for
such institutions as the Lute Society and the Czech
Classical Guitar Society. Most of his concerts are solo,
but he also appears with his renowned flamenco guitarist
brother Jon, as broadcast worldwide to an estimated 12
million people on BBC WORLD television during their 2006
tour of Poland.
Ben Salfield’s recent schedule has included concerts and
masterclasses in Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark,
France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden and the
United Kingdom. 2012-13 sees visits to other European
countries and a trip is being planned to South America
for the autumn...
A showman of the highest calibre, Ben Salfield is known
for his "on-the-edge style" and stagecraft. A
crowd-pleasing style and media-friendly attitude helped
him sell out in 14 consecutive shows during 2010. He has
been featured on TV and radio, in magazines and
newspapers Europe-wide and is thought to have had more
column inches written about him than any other modern
lutenists. Also known as a composer, lecturer and an
"inspirational teacher", he has judged major European
guitar competitions and taught in international summer
schools.
Tireless Ben Salfield has a reputation for completing
nearly impossible feats of lutenistic endurance,
including appearing in 5 countries during a 17-day tour
in Europe, performing for 8-hours non-stop in a 24-hour
charity play-a-thon, and appearing twice in concert in a
single night after a concert sold out, to avoid
disappointing the 150+ people waiting outside who were
unable to obtain tickets!
Ben Salfield's third solo disc is due for release in
2012. A documentary film and a foray into jazz and blues
guitar are also planned.
